The Children’s House

The Children’s House is a church-based Montessori environment for children ages 3-6 years.  First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs established this school in 1981 to provide a quality preschool education, in a Christian environment, for the young children of this church and community.

The children will start school on Monday, August 27 in two different (phase-in) groups.

3-year-olds (first-year students) will attend from 8:30-10 AM Monday – Friday.

Kindergartners and second-year students will attend from 10:30 AM – 12 PM Monday – Friday.

Phasing-in is an important part of the planning for a successful beginning to the school year. Just as we carefully sequence the materials in the environment and choose activities with self-correcting features, much thought is given to starting the children in a gradual progression. This helps to provide a positive experience for each child. Phasing-in gives the children the special attention and positive modeling necessary for a happy and successful start in the Montessori classroom each year.

Regular morning school hours of 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM will begin on Tuesday, September 4.

Afternoon and Kindergarten extended days (T/TH) begin the week of Monday, September 10.

The role of the teacher in a Montessori environment is to inspire the human potential, leading children to ask questions, think for themselves, explore, investigate and discover.  The teacher’s ultimate objective is to help the child learn independently while retaining their natural curiosity, creativity and intelligence.  Montessori teachers do not only present lessons, they are also facilitators, mentors and guides.  Each of the five teachers at the Children’s House is either a certified Montessori Primary educator, has extensive training or is in the process of training/certification.  Each teacher has a genuine love and respect of children and the way God created each one individually.

Being the only Montessori preschool on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we have a very long waiting list. Because of this, it is recommended that you get your child on the list as early as possible.  Many people put their child on the waiting list when they are pregnant.

No child will be enrolled without being on the waiting list.  Even church members and siblings must be put on the waiting list.  If you are interested in a Montessori education for your preschooler, we recommend that you put your child on the waiting list – even if you are undecided – you will always have the opportunity to decline if you make other plans.

Priority enrollment is given to children who have a sibling currently enrolled at the Children’s House, followed by children of First Presbyterian Church members and places remaining are filled from the general waiting list.

To put your child on the waiting list, please fill out and submit the form below.  A teacher from the Children’s House Montessori School will contact you via phone or e-mail.
